Ritual of Release visualises an in-between of external and internal through the meticulous construction of the painterly surface. Incandescently expanding, the sheer layers of the work emit a sense of unexpected encounter. The construction of the work reveals the artist’s desire to emphasize the importance of mental and physical process. Through bodily movement, Shayna repeatedly wipes away paint on the panel, allowing the pigments to seep in, move around, and leave traces; this process simultaneously becomes a ritual of erasure as well as instigation.
