Oxus Culture, c. 2200-1800 BC. White limestone H: 10 cm W: 6 cm. Courtesy of Private Collection
Standing Bird Figure is an exemplary work from the Oxus culture, which was a Bronze Age civilization of Central Asia. Made with white limestone, the face of the anthropomorphic figure has subtly emerging features of a bird. The elongated body, broad shoulders and the narrow yet protruded neck line extends all the way up to the figure’s head. Despite the work’s simplicity, the bird-like feature of the figure is easily noticeable, suggesting the original maker’s meticulous attention to detail.
