In Untitled (111220), purposefully dynamic and vigorously painted fabrics frame the reclining figure. Engulfed by the hovering bed sheet and weighted down by his own clothes, Emanuel Carvalho depicts himself in the middle of a fleeting moment. As part of creating this painting, the artist took photographs of himself on three different occasions. This reflects the artist’s contemplation of existence and mortality as a larger motif in his work. The performative stance of the body, objects, and space investigate the seismic nature of visual processing, questioning the layers that comprise subconscious emotional response.
