Emerging from the centre of this Roman floor mosaic is Medusa, the Greek mythological monster with snake hair and wings protruding from her forehead. Highly favoured by artists due to the tension between its beauty and beast-like qualities, Medusa, alongside other Gorgon head symbols, was a commonly utilized symbol to ward off evil spirits and protect the building it was placed in. The vibrantly ornate geometric mosaic exudes the brilliant construction of its original construction.
