b.1979, Portugal, works in Hong Kong.
Attentively surveying the objects that are a part of ordinary urban landscapes, João sheds light to the discrepancy that exists between our understanding of materiality and its real conditions. The works that are featured in AORA are replications of the styrofoam boxes that are easily found in Hong Kong wet markets. Due to their ubiquity, the boxes are often regarded as disposable with no particular value or impact. However, the inherent quality of styrofoam prevents these boxes from decomposing, taking millions of years to completely disappear. What we deem as transient has the potential to easily surpass our physical presence.
