b. 1977, Toronto, works in London.
Influenced by Shaan’s personal history, the descending geometrical figures in the work are inspired by steps of minarets, slender prayer towers that are built in mosques. As a symbol of Islam both religiously and culturally, the motif is disrupted in very subtle ways. The minute visual divergences that exist in the work represent the individual deviations that we experience in a larger socio-cultural context. In this conscious construction, nuance and simplicity coexist in the boldly painted canvas. The slight difference of vividly colored hues defines the architecturally defined surface; the uneven convergence of the two blocks also demand a second look.
