The ruminative surface created by Stephanie Burt is derived from an excerpt from the Gertrude Stein poem: “What is the current that makes machinery, that makes it crackle, what is the current that presents a long line and a necessary waist. What is this current.” Burt applies the posed question and investigates the construction of the ideal female image, particularly through film. Made with materials that channel the costume of a female character in an Alfred Hitchcock movie, Vertigo, the work transmits a sense of cautious tactility.
